Avoid Bad Habits

For each person who dies a natural death, ninety-nine die through their own negligence. -Yerushalmi, Shabbat 14:14

More people die from overeating than from hunger. -Talmud, Shabbat 33a

The stones on which we sat when we were young are waging war against us in our old age. -Yerushalmi Beitzah 1:7

Can one go on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? -Proverbs 6:28

We often bring bad health upon ourselves through our own actions. Good health is just as much a matter of what we do and it is what we don't do. For instance, the dictum that "the stones on which we sat when we were young are waging war against us in our old age" could be restated for me as "the fried chicken and french fries I ate when I was young are clogging up my arteries today!" Thus, pay attention not only to doing those things which promote health, but also avoid those things which detract from it. As it says in Proverbs, you can't walk on hot coals and not get your feet burned (Proverbs 6:28).
