I am the Lord that heals you. -Exodus 15:26
Man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord does man live. -Deuteronomy 8:3
The Lord will strengthen him on his sick bed. -Psalm 41:4
He heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds. -Psalm 147:3
See now that I am He, and there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver out of My hand. -Deuteronomy 32:39
Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has formed man in wisdom and created in him many ducts and organs. It is well known that if but one of these be opened that should be closed, or if one of these be closed that should be open, it would be impossible to survive and to stand before Thee. Blessed art Thou, who heals all flesh and works wondrous things. -The Morning Blessings
Ultimately, it is the power of life itself that heals us. With our modern science, we can manipulate life, we can clone it, and we can even alter genetic codes. However, we cannot create life from scratch. We can repair the engine, but we cannot create the spark. Thus, the role of the physician is to encourage healing, but he is not the source of healing. The essence of life is beyond our understanding, and without it there is only an empty shell.
The prayer above from the morning blessings is a reminder to us that energy must be able to flow freely at all levels in order for life to continue. In addition to the flow of energy that occurs at the physical level and the emotional flow that we experience from person to person, it is also important for a flow to be open between man and God. In Kabbalistic lore, a line of light descends from the Holy One into the universe to nourish and sustain it. Man, being a microcosm of the universe, also has a need to keep a channel to the Divine clear and open. For details on my favorite methods of Kabbalistic meditation, click here.
