GEVURAH
Gevurah means
strength and might in Hebrew. It corresponds to Mars in astrology.
To use a popular modern idiom, I like to characterize it as the
"way of the warrior". Through Gevurah we accept discipline
and structure into our lives. Traditionally, the structure we
assume is the mitzvot, the yoke of the commandments. I liken the
situation to that of a dancer. Anyone can get up and dance, and
some people produce great, spontaneous dances. However, those
who accept the discipline of classical ballet learn to control
and move their bodies in ways that the untrained dancer never
will. The end result of this added discipline is a freedom of
body and movement that creates a joy beyond description. It is
an ethereal pleasure to behold a great dance performance, and
an even greater joy to be the dancer whose body can move in such
a way. Thus, by accepting discipline and structure into our lives
we can reach levels of growth beyond what we imagine.
