The previous chapter focused on how the One gives the illusion of dividing into three and the three give birth to the rest of creation. In this chapter we encounter a further level in the individuation of the universe. Another experience we have are of qualities that exist along a continuum such as life and death, wealth and poverty. It is debatable whether there are really only seven such polarities in life, but the larger point is that these polarities exist. In the Hebrew aleph-bet, seven letters have both a soft and a hard sound, and these letters are used to represent those things which exist in polarity. On the Tree of Life the three paths that cross horizontally from one side to another correspond to the three mother letters and suggest how we may balance our left and right sides through air, water, and fire. The seven double letters, however, correspond to the seven vertical paths on the Tree of Life. These letter/paths, which are further described in this chapter, represent ways in which we can elevate ourselves to a higher state of being or degenerate to a lower state.
