Descendants of Abram Rowden
Note: New information has been found on the family of William J. Rowden. He, his son Abram, and their respective families were found in the 1860 Census Index for Indiana. They were living at that time in Union Township, Delaware County, IN. The nearest post office is shown as Eaton. William J. was born in Maryland abt. 1799. He married Mary, maiden name unknown, who was born in Ohio abt. 1802. All of their children will be added to this site soon. The descendency of their son Abram follows below. Information on the parents of Sarah Luella PETTIS is not yet verified.

Notes for WILLIAM BENJAMIN ROWDEN:
William Benjamin Rowden went to Wichita, Sedgwick County, KS after the burial of his wife, Sarah, on Christmas Day 1929. Rolla Ira his son, daughter-in-law Ruby, along with their sons Pete and Ervin, and daughter Clarice were living and working there. At his death not quite a year later, his body was transported by train back to Searcy, White County, AR for burial next to Sarah . They are both buried in the Gum Springs (Wilkes) Cemetery. Rolla and his family returned to live in Searcy about three years later, approximately the first of 1934.
Notes for SARAH LUELLA PETTIS:
Sarah Luella Pettis was born August 3, 1861 in Wheatley, St. Francis Co., AR.
Sarah had a brother William Robert Pettis, a sister Maria Ellen, and a half-sister, Mrs. Theodocia I. Criswell Copeland of Joplin. MO. Sarah also had two half-brothers Luther and Rufus Criswell. Her step-father was W.K. Criswell. See notes for W. R. under listing for Rolla Ira Rowden.
Sarah preceeded her husband, William Benjamin Rowden, in death by about a year. She died December 24, 1929 in Searcy, White County, AR and is buried with him in the Gum Springs (Wilkes) Cemetery. Sarah was buried on Christmas Day 1929, services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Williams of the local Methodist Church to which Sarah belonged.

3. LILLIAN4 O. ROWDEN (WILLIAM BENJAMIN3, ABRAM2, WILLIAM J.1) was born July 1, 1889 in KS. She married (1) JOHN HESCHELE (2) SAMUEL D. TAYLOR.
Notes for LILLIAN O. ROWDEN:
Lillian moved to Searcy, AR from Lebanon, KS in the fall of 1909 at the age of 20 with her first husband John Heschele and their infant daughter Clarice 'Luella' . In March of 1914, they moved to Rogers, Benton County, AR. John died there on March 16, 1921 after which Lillian married Samuel D. Taylor and they returned to Searcy in the fall of 1922. Sam Taylor was a cotton farmer who had children of his own from a previous marriage. Sam apparently moved his family to Cullman, AL where he died at 83 years of age. Lillian died there at 82 years of age in 1971 and is buried next to Sam in Livinston Chapel Cemetery. See scrapbook of Sam D. Taylor and Sarah Pettis for more photos.
Samuel D. Taylor, born February 17, 1882, died at approx 1:15 A.M., Sunday, Sept 5, 1965 in the Cullman Nursing Home, Cullman, AL. Funeral services were held at Livingston Chapel Church and internment in the adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by Rev Curtis Chappell and Rev Millard Holmes. Survived at that time by his wife, Lillian; sons Herman, Marlin, and Melton; one daughter, Mrs. A. L. Summers; 5 sisters and 1 brother; 13 grand-children and 22 great grand-children.

i. CLARICE LUELLA5 HESCHELE born January 23, 1908 in Lebanon, Smith Co., KS, died September 27, 1934 in Searcy, White Co., AR. She married Everett Clause on August 22, 1925 in Searcy, White Co., AR
Notes for CLARICE LUELLA HESCHELE:
Luella,as she was affectionately known, was the natural daughter of Lillian Rowden and John Heschele and the step-daughter of Samuel D. Taylor. She and Everett supposedly had four children, names unknown at this time. We do know that Everett died in Searcy in September of 1986 at the age of 86.
4. ROLLA IRA4 ROWDEN (WILLIAM BENJAMIN3, ABRAM2, WILLIAM J.1) was born August 06, 1893 in Lebanon, Smith County, KS1, and died August 01, 1976 in Searcy, White County, AR2. He married (1) NORMA IONE MAJORS, daughter of BRIT MAJORS and PRUDE LANGFORD. He married (2) RUBY MAY OLIVER, daughter of EARL OLIVER and VERA CLARK.
Notes for ROLLA IRA ROWDEN:
W. R. Pettis, a brother of Sarah Luella Pettis, lived in Hunter, Woodruff County, AR in the early 1900's and operated the W.R. Pettis General Store there.
W. R. married Elizabeth A. (Lizzie) See in Hunter on Jan. 2, 1889. Lizzie died there Nov. 16, 1910. W.R. then married Velma Anna Baxter (daughter of A. L. Baxter of Hunter) on July 1, 1912.
W. R. was killed in Cotton Plant, AR Feb. 21, 1934. The cemetery records of Woodruff County indicate that W.R. and Elizabeth (1st wife) are buried in the west part of the Hunter Cemetery.
Rolla, a nephew of Pettis from Searcy, AR, lived with and kept the books for Pettis as a young man. We do know Rolla was back in Searcy where he married Norma Ione Majors on April 24, 1916 - a son, Virgil William Rowden, was born there February 15, 1917. Rolla and Norma divorced in Oct 1917. Notes for NORMA IONE MAJORS:
Norma Ione Majors was likely born in Searcy, White Co., AR about 1898, the eldest of five children. She married Rolla Ira Rowden in Searcy, AR on April 24, 1916. She and Rolla divorced (Oct 1917) after the birth of their only son, Virgil William Rowden. She and Virgil moved to Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR shortly afterwards.
There she was married to Charles L. Hanley (reportedly a baseball player) and then later to Phillip 'Dutch' Hemmelrath, who she married in Little Rock on January 30, 1935. They lived at 1601 Wright Avenue. At some point after this, she and Dutch moved to McGeHee, Desha County, AR where Dutch was supposedly originally from. They were apparently back in Little Rock though at the time of her early death on January 10, 1937. She died in Baptist Hospital of pheumonia which developed from enfluenza, and is buried at Roselawn Memorial Park. Her death certificate has no date or place of birth recorded, only her age as 38, and indicates that she and Dutch were living at 2110 Chester St. at the time of her death.
