For any farrier, there's considerable ego massage involved in having
your horses do whatever they do better than other horses, especially
in those disciplines that are objectively quantified.  For me, the new
wore off winning stakes, grand prix, and big barrel races a long time
ago, but the satisfaction involved in having a horse walk up limping
and walk off sound never has.

The rush is better than drugs.
